Tackling waiting lists could protect our hospital's future

The success of Scotland's only National Waiting Times Centre in Clydebank could be repeated in Dunfermline according to Lib Dem by-election candidate Willie Rennie.

He is calling on Fife Health Board to consider using capacity at the Queen Margaret Hospital to reduce length waits in orthopaedic surgery.

The Lib Dem candidate believes that dedicating part of Dunfermline's hospital to tackling waiting times in the East of Scotland could help to secure the long term future of the Queen Margaret Hospital.

Commenting today, Willie Rennie said:

"I want the Queen Margaret Hospital to provide more health services and treatment. This suggestion must be given serious consideration by Fife Health Board. A new service as significant as a National Waiting Times Centre would help to secure the long-term future of Dunfermline's hospital and help to tackle national waiting times.

"Patients needing hip and knee replacements can face up to six months wait here in Scotland. Everyone wants to tackle these delays and the success story of the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank could be repeated here in Dunfermline.

"At the moment, Clydebank is Scotland's only dedicated waiting times centre. A centre on the East Coast could build on that, and Dunfermline would be ideal.

"Local people are concerned that Fife Health Board will continue to move NHS services to Kirkcaldy. A crack down on national waiting times, led by Queen Margaret hospital, would bring core services to Dunfermline and help to safeguard our hospital's future."
